Pop videos for books? It might sound like an uncomfortable marriage of media but short online promotional films for novels are being seen as the latest marketing tool by an increasingly web-savvy book trade.

From this article, which gives the </em>Hey Nostradamus promo</em> (requires flash) as an example of the form.

I feel strangely conflicted about this. By and large books certainly need more (or at least more effective) promotion than they're currently getting, and the Hey Nostradamus promo is certainly nice enough (even if it does remind me, for some reason I can't put my finger on, of Requiem For A Dream), so on that level if it's an effective tool I applaud the use of it. At the same time, though, I can't help there's something just, well, wrong about advertising books using multimedia in this way. It's not exactly 253, after all.

Maybe this is the first sign that I'm getting old and no longer have my finger on the pulse of youth culture.
